Open-Source PIM-Systeme (Product Information Management)
Open source PIM solutions offer centralised management of product data without licence costs. Below is a list of powerful open source PIM systems, with a focus on MIT licences (where available) and other common open source licences. The table provides an overview of the origin, provider, licence and special features of the community, followed by brief descriptions of the functions and characteristics of each system.
Details on the individual open source PIM systems:
- AtroPIM – A modern, modularly configurable PIM system from Germany. Developed by AtroCore GmbH in Regensburg (contact: Alexander Zinchenko, CEO), it is aimed at companies of all sizes. AtroPIM is licensed under GPL v3 and is based on the AtroCore platform. It is API-first and highly customisable (data model, UI layouts, roles/rights, workflows). All functions are available in the free version; optional paid modules extend AI functions, for example. Special features: User-friendly web interface (mobile-enabled), 100% open source with no functional restrictions and therefore no "feature limits" as with some competing products. Community: Still relatively young with ~99 GitHub stars, but active development (version 1.13 in April 2024) and commercial support from the manufacturer.
- UnoPIM – A lightweight Laravel-based PIM with MIT licence. Originally developed by Webkul (India), UnoPIM targets small to medium-sized businesses with simple requirements. It offers centralised product data management with an intuitive user interface and basic functions (import/export, user management, multilingualism). A notable feature is the integration of "Magic AI" for automatic content generation (LLM-based) for product texts. Special features: Very easy to get started with, no complex configuration required, suitable for non-technical users. UnoPIM is highly scalable (proven for >10 million products). Community: Very active – UnoPIM has over 8,000 GitHub stars and regular commits (as of Nov. 2025), indicating a large developer community.
Update 2025: All of the following systems, which were originally open source, are no longer open source or dual licensed. This means that the open source licence is functionally restricted.
- Pimcore – An established open source platform from Austria that combines PIM with MDM, DAM, CMS and e-commerce in one. Pimcore is backed by Pimcore GmbH (Salzburg) under the leadership of Dietmar Rietsch (CEO). The Community Edition was licensed under GPL v3 up to version 11; since 2025, the Pimcore Open Core License (POCL) has applied to version 12+ (source code remains viewable, but the licence is now proprietary open-core). Features: Pimcore is extremely flexible and scalable for complex product data – it supports fully customisable data models, hierarchical product variants, comprehensive rights management and multi-channel publishing. Compared to specialised PIMs, however, Pimcore is more complex to set up and operate (steep learning curve, developers required). Special features: Enterprise features such as workflow engine, versioning and AI-supported data enrichment are available (some only in commercial editions). Community: Very large – Pimcore has been around since 2010, has ~3,700 GitHub stars and a global partner network. The software is actively being developed (e.g. release 12.3 in December 2025) and is used by over 118,000 companies. This makes Pimcore one of the most popular open source PIMs in the enterprise sector.
- Akeneo – A leading open-source PIM from France, specifically geared towards product experience management in e-commerce. Developed by Akeneo SAS (Nantes; co-founder Frédéric de Gombert), Akeneo was launched in 2013 and has since spread globally. The Community Edition is licensed under OSL 3.0 and can be used free of charge, while Akeneo also offers commercial editions (Growth/Enterprise). Features: Akeneo offers a user-friendly UI for marketing teams, centralised product catalogue management with translations, categories, attributes and channels. It is particularly strong in product data enrichment and simple multichannel publishing. Limitations of the free edition: no built-in DAM (media management) and some mass editing tools are missing. special features: Akeneo focuses on ease of use – quick installation, flat learning curve – and offers extensions for asset management and reference data in higher editions. Numerous plugins and connectors (e.g. to e-commerce platforms) make it easy to integrate. Community: Very large and active – over 70,000 companies worldwide use Akeneo's Community Edition. There are thousands of Akeneo implementations, regular releases (version 7.0 in 2023) and a lively contribution culture (over 250 contributors on GitHub). This makes Akeneo a standard system in the open source PIM environment.
- Ergonode – A modern open-source PIM from Poland with an MIT licence, launched in 2018. Ergonode is backed by a start-up from Poznań, with Marcin Piwowarczyk as co-founder and CEO. Ergonode stands out thanks to its UX-oriented design and headless architecture. It offers an intuitive web interface for product managers (drag & drop editing, visual content enrichment) and collaborative features such as tasks and comments. Special features: Focus on usability – Ergonode was developed with marketing teams in mind who are switching from spreadsheets. It supports templates for product data, flexible attribute sets and has built-in workflow and translation tools. Its API-first design makes it easy to integrate into shops, CMS, etc. Community & Development: Ergonode was initially open on GitHub (code MIT-licensed, ~107 stars). In recent years, it has received significant investments (including PLN 5 million from the founder of eobuwie.pl) and developed version 4 (as of 2025). There is a free open-source core version and a supplementary cloud service. Ergonode is used productively in several countries (e.g. by a large Swedish pet food brand and various fashion retailers). The active community and commercial tailwind make Ergonode a promising young PIM solution in the open source sector.
